Have you ever wondered about those acorns stuck in the pine trees? There is a Woodpecker in our forest. You see them everywhere. You hear them too. They knock these little holes out in these tree trunks and plant these acorns. The acorns fit perfectly inside the holes and they're very difficult to pull out. Wasps then come along and plant their larva inside the acorns. The Woodpeckers later come back and eat the larva. It's a very clever food chain process provided by Mother Nature. It has long been thought that the squirrels placed them there for winter feeding, which has turned out to be simply a myth. The squirrels have other methods of storing their food for winter. |
