| Do you look good in orange? Do you like to help others enjoy the pristine National Forest by removing unsightly trash left by less conscientious visitors? Then, MARS is for you. MARS (Mountain Area Removal Squad) is the clean-up crew on the mountain. Three or four times a year, we clean up a two-mile section of the Sunrise Highway between Mile Posts 21.5 and 23.5. The Roost (Volunteer Center) is situated right in the middle of this Section of Sunrise. "Martians" also swoop down on the snow play areas after snow events and clean up after snow revelers. Everyone participating is provided with reflective vests, bright orange trash bags, and litter sticks to help with the cleanup effort. What mountain visitors leave behind truly boggles the mind. Martians have found every item of clothing you can think of, fast food containers (there's no fast-food outlet within 25 miles), glass bottles and aluminum cans, and personal effects (soiled diapers and worse). We even hauled off half a surfboard from the snow play area a while back. If you would like to participate in the next MARS expedition be sure to check the calendar on our website or contact Tom at info@lmva.org. | |||||||
