The Laguna Recreation Area is a land of contrasts. At nearly 6000 feet above sea level, it has a distinctly mountainous and remote feel to it, but is only an hour drive from the beaches of San Diego. As the Sunrise Highway winds its way through the eastern escarpment of the Laguna Mountains toward the village of Mt. Laguna, views to the east reveal the stark beauty of the desert nearly 4000 feet below, while areas to the west are rolling hills of pine and oak.

Hiking in the Laguna Recreation Area is a four season proposition. Summer is warm with cool nights; fall brings crispness and the aroma of fallen leaves; winter kicks in with refreshing snowfalls, and spring is all about wildflowers.

There are trails for the fearless (Noble Canyon on a bike)
for the family (Kwaaymii Nature Trail)
for the desert viewers (Pacific Crest Trail)
and for the parched (Cottonwood Creek Falls).

There are short loop hikes (Wooded Hill) and long epic loops (combine trails 10-13 with 1 and 7), most within easy access of a campground.

The trail map and accompanying descriptions found here (thanks to our volunteers Bill and Phyllis Goddard with Bill Hoermann, who heroically assembled these) can also be purchased at the Visitor Information Center. The descriptions are intended as general guides, not as sole navigational tools. For topographical maps of the area, get the Mount Laguna and Monument Peak maps at topoZone. Remember, weather in the Lagunas can change quickly and radically. Layer your clothing and bring lots of water. Enjoy!
