This trail starts right behind the Visitor Information Center and climbs gently
to the top of Pinyon Point where you will find morteros, grinding holes in the
rocks used by the Kwaaymii, the Native Americans who spent their summer months
in the Laguna Mountains. The top of the hill is adorned with two large and four
smaller beautiful specimens of the Sierra Juarez pinyon pine as well as holy-leafed
cherry and prickly pear cactus. These provided nourishment for the Kwaaymii. In
winter, the area is blanketed with snow, completing the four-season cycle. The
view from the top is grand. Every member of the family can enjoy this leisurely
half-mile hike, and stop in the VIC for more visuals of plants, animals and artifacts
that live on in the Lagunas. |
